Catégorie:En traduction Anarchists are opposed to borders and states. As such, many anarchists work in solidarity with immigrants who have moved in search of a better life for themselves and their families. The current debate over immigration ignores a glaring contradiction- the increasing mobility of corporations and goods across borders with disregard to local opinion, laws and standards while at the same time governments have begun a clamp down on the movement of people.
Corporate globalization has been a prime target for the anarchist movement. This brand of globalization is deeply connected to trends in immigration. Many people are being displaced by the policies of institutions and agreements such as NAFTA, the WTO, World Bank and IMF. With immigration gaining more and more prominence in political debates it's important that radicals be connecting the dots between immigration and globalization.
Examples of organizations fighting for immigrant rights which anarchists have played large roles with include the Industrial Workers of the World, Students for a Democratic Society, Coalition of Immokalee Workers, the Delete the Border Collective, ORGANIC collective and Anti-Racist Action.
This past May Day immigrants chose May 1st to participate in a general strike. Their activities overlapped with anarchists historical observance of May Day for its connection to the Haymarket Martyrs. In many towns anarchists and immigrants worked together to carry out joint marches, walk-outs, and strikes.
Anarchists have been fighting for the rights of all people in other parts of the world as well. In Europe the No Border Network has been very active, holding border camps to bring attention to the issue of immigration. In Australia anarchists took direct action against a detention center holding refugees by cutting through the fence and helping detainees escape. In the occupied territories Anarchists Against the Wall has done similar work by cutting the fence that is being built by Israel which has destroyed acres upon acres of land which Palestinians relied on to grow such things as olive trees.
