L'Assiette au beurre était un journal illustré français ouvert aux dessinateurs anarchistes. Il parut du 4 avril 1901 au 15 octobre 1912, avec 593 numéros. Il se distingue de la plupart des autres feuilles humoristiques par sa composition inédite : chaque numéro était composé de 16 dessins ou caricatures en pleine page. Un artiste en assurait la réalisation sur un thème précis, ce qui fait de chaque livraison un véritable album.

Le créateur de l'Assiette au beurre

Son créateur, Samuel Schwarz, était un juif hongrois naturalisé français. En 1904 il fit faillite et l'hebdomadaire fut repris par de Joncières jusqu'en 1912.

Les participants

Des dessinateurs talentueux ont participé au journal et sont devenus célèbres comme Steinlen, Benjamin Rabier. D'autres sont tombés dans l'oubli, mais ont joué un rôle important comme Grandjouan, un syndicaliste cégétiste, Jossot, un individualiste libertaire non militant, ou encore Ricardo Florès Magon.

Des écrivains importants comme Anatole France et Octave Mirbeau ont participé à certains numéros.

Le but de cet hebdomadaire était de se moquer des autorités, des riches, des militaires, des policiers, des curés, à travers la caricature. Les questions politiques, avec des dessins anti-juifs, anti-anglais, anti-allemands, étaient également traités. L'Assiette au beurre, qui a employé plus de 200 artistes étrangers, se caractérise par son ouverture internationale. Les sujets de société figuraient aussi dans L'Assiette au beurre comme la peine de mort, la traite des enfants, ou encore des thèmes de la vie quotidienne comme « Le gaz », « La police » ou « Paris la nuit ».

Les adhérents

Cette revue s'adressait à une bourgeoisie aisée de gauche qui accueillait favorablement la plupart de ses idées. Cette sensibilité changea à l'approche de la première guerre mondiale. Le prix de vente de l'hebdomadaire, variant entre 20 et 50 centimes, (ce qui correspond aujourd'hui au prix d'un livre de poche) était inaccessible aux ouvriers et aux gens modestes.

La fin de L'Assiette au beurre

L'Assiette au beurre était une revue exigeante d'un point de vue artistique, mais son prix de revient devenait de plus en plus élevé. Dans les années 1910-1911, elle accusa une baisse de qualité technique et artistique due à des ennuis financiers. M. de Joncières consacra une partie de sa fortune au journal.

Le 12 octobre 1912 sortit le dernier numéro de L'Assiette au beurre, ensuite il disparut des kiosques à journaux et ce fut la fin d'une décennie de caricatures françaises.
