William Godwin (3 mars 1756 - 7 avril 1836), fils d'un pasteur dissident, était un écrivain politique et divers Anglais, considéré, comme un des plus importants précurseur des pensées anarchistes et utilitaristes. Il est également célèbre pour les femmes de sa vie. Il s'est marié avec Mary Wollstonecraft, écrivain féministe, en 1797, et ensemble ils eurent une fille, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, plus connue sous le nom de Mary Shelley, qui écrivit Frankenstein, et fut mariée au poète Percy Shelley.
