À environ 4 heures de l'après-midi, le 22 octobre 2006, les organisateurs/trices du Vancouver Anti-Poverty Committee (Comité Anti-pauvreté de Vancouver) ont démarré une marche du Pigeon Park jusqu'au North Star hotel, où ils et elles entrèrent et déclarèrent le squat. Le plancher supérieur du bâtiment était occupé par plusieurs squateurs/euses alors que les manifestant(e)s restaient à l'extérieur.
Les manifestant(e)s déclarèrent que l'action fut décidée suite de l'échec de la Non-Partisan Association de Vancouver, dont le maire Sam Sullivan faisait partie, échec à l'achat des hôtels inutilisés pour les convertir en hébergement abordable.
