Mikhaïl Aleksandrovitch Bakounine (en cyrillique : Михаил Александрович Бакунин), ou Michel Bakounine dans les pays francophone, est un philosophe anarchiste russe, né le 8 mai 1814 à Priamoukhino en Russie et mort le 1er juillet 1876 à Berne, en Suisse, où il est enterré sous le nom de Michel Bakounine. Célèbre révolutionnaire Russe et théoricien de l'anarchie dont il est considéré comme l'un des pères spirituels.

Biographie[edit]

Débuts dans l'armée[edit]

Bakounine nait dans une famille aristocrate sous l'empire Russe dans le village de Pryamukhino (Прямухино) entre Torzhok (Торжок) et Kuvshinovo (Кувшиново), à Tver guberniya, au nord-est de Moscou. A 14 ans il part pour St. Pétersbourg rejoindre l'université d'artillerie. Il termine ses études en 1832 et est nommé officier junior dans la garde impériale Russe en 1834. Il est alors envoyé à Minsk et Gardinas en Lituanie (actuel Biélorussie). En 1835, il se brouille avec sa famille en prenant le parti de sa soeur protestant contre un mariage malheureux. Son père souhaite qu'il poursuive sa carrière militaire ou qu'il rejoigne le service civil, il n'en fera rien et démissionnera de son service.

Intérêt pour la philosophie[edit]

Après avoir quitté son service militaire, il part étudier la philosophie à Moscou où il commence à fréquenter régulièrement les cercles radicaux. Il se lie d'amitié avec un groupe d'anciens universitaires engagé dans une étude systématique de la philosophie idéaliste et groupé autour du poète Nikolay Stankevich. La philosophie de Kant est initialement centrale dans leur étude, mais progresse vers Schelling, Fichte, et Hegel. A l'automne 1835, Bakounine constitue un cercle philosophique dans sa ville natale de Pryamukhino. Début 1836, Bakounine retourne à Moscou et publie des traductions les livres de Fichte Quelques Conférences Concernant les Vacances Scolaires et Le Chemin vers une Vie Bénite qui deviennent ses livres préférés. Sous l'influence de Stankevich, il lit aussi Goethe, Shiller et Hoffmann.

Cette même inspiration encourage Bakounine à embrasser une immanence religieuse extra-cléricale:

Laissons la religion devenir la base et la réalité de nos vies et de nos actions, mais laissons-la être pure et unique religion de la raison divine et de l'amour divin, et pas ... cette religion qui a taché de se dissocier de tout ce qui fait la substance et la vie de la vraie existence morale. ... Regarde le Christ, mon cher ami; ... Sa vie à été complètement divine, pleine d'abnégation, et Il a fait tout cela pour l'humanité, trouvant Sa satisfaction et Son plaisir dans la dissolution de Son état matériel.
... Parce que nous avons baptisé dans ce monde et nous avons communié avec son amour divin, nous avons le sentiment que nous sommes des créatures divines, que nous sommes libres, et que nous avons été ordonnés pour l'émancipation de l'humanité, qui est restée victime des lois instinctives de l'existence inconsciente. ... La liberté absolue et l'amour absolu, ceci est notre but; la libération de l'humanité et du monde entier, ceci est notre but.[1]

Il devint de plus en plus influencé par Hegel et fournit la première traduction Russe de son travail. Pendant cette période, il rencontre les socialistes Alexander Herzen et Nikolay Ogarev, et les slavophiles Konstantin Aksakov et Piotr Tschaadaev. A cette période, il commence a développer son opinion Panslavique. Après de longues altercations avec son père, Bakounine se rend à Berlin en 1840. Son objectif était toujours de devenir professeur d'université, un "apôtre de la vérité" comme lui et ses amis l'imaginaient, mais il a tôt fait de rencontrer et rejoindre les Jeunes Hégéliens (dont Max Stirner à aussi fait partie), plus tard connus sous le nom de Gauche Hégélienne, et rejoint le mouvement socialiste de Berlin. Dans son essai de 1842, La réaction en Allemagne, il argumente en faveur du rôle révolutionnaire de la négation, résumé par cette phrase qui conclue son essai:

"La joie de la destruction est en même temps une joie créatrice"

Après trois semestres à Berlin, Bakounine se rend à Dresde où il se lie d'amitié avec Arnold Ruge. Là bas il lit également le livre de Lorenz von Stein Der Sozialismus und Kommunismus des heutigen Frankreich et développe une passion pour le socialisme. Il abandonne son intérêt pour une carrière académique, dévouant toujours plus de son temps à promouvoir la révolution. Le gouvernement Russe, voyant dans son radicalisme une menace, ordonne son retour en Russie. Sur le refus de Bakounine, sa propriété est confisquée. A la place il se rend avec Georg Herwegh à Zurich en Suisse.

Suisse, Bruxelles, Paris[edit]

Pendant les 6 mois où il reste à Zürich, il devient étroitement associé avec le communiste Allemand Wilhem Weitling. Jusqu'en 1848, il reste en termes amicaux avec le communiste Allemand, s'appelant lui-même communiste occasionnellement et écrivant des articles sur le communisme dans le journal Schweitzerische Republikaner. Il déménage pour Genève peu de temps avant l'arrestation de Weitling. Son nom apparait fréquemment dans la correspondance de Weitling saisie par la police. Ce qui conduit à la circulation de rapports à la police impériale. L'ambassadeur russe à Berne ordonne à Bakounine de retourner en Russie, mais à la place il se rend à Bruxelles, où il rencontre de nombreux nationalistes Polonais, comme Joachim Lelwel. Cependant il se retrouve en conflit avec eux sur leur demande d'une Pologne basé sur les frontières de 1776 comme il défend le droit d'autonomie des non-polonais sur ces territoires. Il n'apprécie pas non plus leur cléricalisme et ils ne soutiennent pas son appel à l'émancipation paysanne.

En 1844 Bakounine se rend à Paris, alors un centre pour le radicalisme européen. Il établit des contacts avec Karl Marx et Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, qui l'impressionnent et avec qui il forme des liens personnels. En Décembre 1844, l'empereur Nicolas édite un décret privant Bakounine de ses privilèges de noble, niant ses droits civil, confisquant ses terres en Russie, et le condamne à l'exile à perpétuité en Sibérie si jamais les autorités Russe mettent la main sur lui. Il répond par une longue lettre à La Réforme, dénoncent les empereurs comme des despotes et appelant à la démocratie en Russie et en Pologne (Carr, 1975, p. 139). En Mars 1846 dans une autre lettre au Constitutionnel il défend la Pologne, après la répression des catholiques là bas. Quelques réfugies Polonais de Kraków, après la défaite de l'insurrection là bas, l'invitent à parler[2] au meeting en Novembre 1847 commémorant l'Insurrection Polonaise de Novembre 1830.

Dans son discours, Bakounine appelais à une alliance entre les peuples Polonais et Russe contre l'empereur, et cherchait "l'effondrement définitif du despotisme Russe". En réaction, il fut expulsé de France et se rendit à Bruxelles. La tentative de Bakounine d'amener Alexander Herzen et Vissarion Belinsky à la conspiration pour une révolution en Russie tombât dans l'oreille d'un sourd. A Bruxelles, Bakounine renoua ses contacts avec les pôles révolutionnaires et Karl Marx à un meeting organisé par Lelewel en février 1848 à propos d'un grand futur pour les slaves, dont la destinée était de rajeunir l'occident. A cette occasion, l'ambassade Russe faisait circuler la rumeur que Bakounine était un agent Russe qui avait outrepassé ses ordres.

Quand le mouvement révolutionnaire de 1848 se déclencha, Bakounine était extatique, malgré le peu d'ampleur que prenait cet évènement en Russie. Bakounine obtint des fonds de certains socialistes du Gouvernement Provisoire, Ferdinand Flocon, Louis Blanc, Alexandre Auguste Ledru-Rollin et Albert L'Ouvrier, pour un projet de fédération Slave libérant ceux sous le joug des Prussiens, Austro-Hongrois et Turcs. Il quitta l'Allemagne voyageant de Baden à Francfort et Köln.

Bakounine supporta la Légion Démocratique Allemande menée par Herwegh dans une tentative avortée de joindre l'insurrection de Friedrich Hecker à Baden. Il se sépara de Marx sur les dernières critiques de Herwegh. Plus tard en 1871, Bakounine écrivit: "Je dois ouvertement admettre que dans cette controverse Marx et Engels étaient dans le vrai. Avec une insolence caractérisée, ils attaquèrent la personnalité d'Herwegh alors qu'il n'était pas là pour se défendre. Dans un face à face avec eux, j'ai fougueusement défendu Herwegh, et commença alors notre aversion mutuelle."[3]

Bakounine se rendit à Berlin, mais fut stoppé vers Posen par la police, en territoire Polonais occupé par la Prusse où se déroulait une insurrection nationaliste. A la place Bakounine se rendit à Leipzig et Breslau, puis à Prague où il participa au Premier Congrès Panslavique. Le Congrès fut suivi par une insurrection avortée que Bakounine avait cherché à promouvoir et intensifier mais qui fut violemment réprimé. Il retournât à Breslau, où Marx re-publiait les allégations prétendant que Bakounine était un agent impérial, clamant que George Sand avait des preuves. Marx rétracta ses allégations après que George Sand pris la défense de Bakounine.

Bakounine publia son Appel aux Slaves[4] à l'automne 1848, dans lequel il proposait que les Slaves révolutionnaires s'unissent avec les révolutionnaires Hongrois, Italiens et Allemands pour renverser les 3 principales autocraties Européennes: l'empire Russe, l'empire Austro-Hongrois et le royaume de Prusse.

Bakounine joua un rôle majeur dans les Insurrections de Mai à Dresden en 1849, aidant à organiser la défense des barricades contre les troupes Prussiennes avec Richard Wagner et Wilhelm Heine. Il fut capturé en Chemnitz et patienta treize mois avant d'être condamné à mort par le gouvernement de Saxe. Comme le gouvernement de Russie et d'Autriche étaient après lui, sa sentence fut commuté en prison à vie. En juin 1850, il fut remis aux autorités Autrichiennes. Onze mois plus tard il reçut une autre sentence de mort, mais elle aussi commuée en emprisonnement à perpétuité. Finalement, en mai 1851, Bakounine fut remis aux autorités Russes.

Emprisonnement, confession et exil[edit]

Bakounine fut mené à la forteresse St Pierre et St Paul située à St Petersbourg. Au début de sa captivité, le comte Orlov, un émissaire de l'empereur Nicolas I, visita Bakounine et lui dit que l'empereur requérait une confession écrite[5] espérant que la confession placerait Bakounine spirituellement aussi bien que physiquement sous le pouvoir de l'état Russe. Comme tous ses actes étaient bien connus, il n'avait aucun secret a révéler, et décida donc d'écrire à l'empereur:

"Vous voulez ma confession; mais vous devez savoir qu'un pécheur en pénitence n'est pas obligé d'impliquer ou révéler les méfaits d'autrui. J'ai seulement l'honneur et la conscience de n'avoir jamais trahi quiconque a placé sa confiance en moi, et c'est pourquoi je ne vous donnerais aucun nom."

En lisant la lettre, l'empereur déclara: "C'est un bon garçon, plein d'esprit, mais c'est un homme dangereux et nous ne devons jamais cesser d'avoir l'œil sur lui."

Après trois années dans les sous-sol du donjon de la forteresse de St Pierre et St Paul, il passa quatre autres années au château de Shlisselburg, à l'est de St Petersbourg. Il y contracta le scorbut, causé par le régime alimentaire épouvantable, et perdit toutes ses dents. Il raconta plus tard qu'il trouva un peu de réconfort en se remémorant la légende de Prométhée. Ces années d'emprisonnement dans des conditions sordides l'ont conduit à supplier son frère de l'achever à l'aide de poison.

Après la mort de Nicolas I, le nouvel empereur Alexandre II raya personnellement le nom de Bakounine de la liste des amnistiés[6]. La mère de Bakounine rendit visite au nouvel empereur pour demander la grâce de son fils, l'empereur lui répondit "Madame, tant que votre fils restera en vie, il ne sera pas libéré". Lorsque Nicolas II lut la confession écrite par Bakounine à Nicolas I, il confiât à son aide: "Mais je ne vois pas le moindre signe de repentance"[6].

Malgré l'animosité que semblait lui porter l'empereur, la peine de prison de Bakounine fut commuée en exil à perpétuité dans la ville de Tomsk (Sibérie orientale) en février 1857. Un an après son arrivée, il épousa Antonia Kwiatkowska, fille d'un marchand polonais. En aout 1858, Bakounine reçut la visite d'un cousin, le général Nikolay Muravyov-Amursky, gouverneur de la Sibérie occidentale depuis 10 ans.


Fuite de l'Exil et retour en Europe[edit]

Envoyé dans la région de l'Amour, ne voyant aucune possibilité de libération, il s'évade vers le Japon, les États-Unis et l'Angleterre en 1861. Il passe le reste de sa vie en exil en Europe occidentale, principalement en Suisse. En 1869 il fonde l'Alliance démocratique sociale. Cependant, l'organisation se voit refuser l'entrée dans la première Internationale des travailleurs, en raison du caractère international de l'organisation, en effet, seules les organisations nationales sont permises. L'Alliance est dissoute la même année et les groupes divers dont elle était composée rejoignent l'Internationale séparément.

En 1870 il participe à un soulèvement à Lyon qui échouera sur les principes, plus tard donnés en exemple par la Commune de Paris.

Les désaccords entre Marx et Bakounine , ont conduit à l'expulsion de ce dernier de l'Internationale en 1872, sous l'ordre du parti marxiste au congrès de la Haye. Il trouve Marx arrogant et prédit que ses méthodes autoritaires mèneront au totalitarisme, mettant en péril la révolution communiste.

Bakounine estimait que la dictature du prolétariat ne pouvait qu'aboutir à l'instauration d'un État autoritaire. Pour lui une société doit s'organiser sur la base de contrats librement consentis par tous. À la fois théoricien et homme d'action, Bakounine lutta jusqu'à l'épuisement contre toute forme d'autorité étatique, économique, sociale, militaire ou religieuse. Je suis un amant fanatique de la liberté, disait-il. Fatigué et malade, Bakounine se retira à Lugano en 1873 et il mourra à Berne le 1er juillet 1876.

Idées et Philosophie[edit]

Critiques du marxisme[edit]

La dispute entre Michel Bakounine et Karl Marx a souligné les différences entre Anarchisme et marxisme. Bakounine était décidemment anti-marxiste. Il a écrit: "Les marxistes se consolent à l'idée que cette dictature sera temporaire et de courte durée. Selon eux, ce joug étatique, cette dictature est une phase de transition nécessaire pour arriver à l'émancipation totale du peuple:1'anarchie ou la liberté étant le but, l'Etat ou la dictature le moyen. Ainsi donc pour affranchir les masses populaires, on devra commencer par les asservir. (...) A cela nous répondons qu'aucune dictature ne peut avoir d'autre fin que de durer le plus longtemps possible. Cependant, les anarchistes autant que les marxistes partagent le même but final, la création d'une société égalitaire, libre, sans classes sociales ou gouvernements. Mais les moyens pour y parvenir restent le principal point de désaccord entre marxistes et anarchistes. Ces derniers croient que la société sans classe et sans état devrait être établie par l'action directe des masses, culminant à une révolution sociale ; et refusent les "stages intermédiaires", comme la dictature du prolétariat (période de transition), sur la base qu'une telle dictature devient rapidement auto-perpétuante. Pour Bakounine, la contradiction fondamentale est, que pour les marxistes, l'anarchisme ou la liberté est le but, mais que l'État et la dictature sont les moyens, et cela, pour libérer les masses...? (Ils auraient donc a être tout d'abord, esclaves?)

Bakounine fut peut-être le premier théoricien de la « nouvelle classe », celle des intellectuels et des dirigeants formant l'appareil bureaucratique de l'État. Bakounine soutient que

l'« Ã‰tat a toujours été le patrimoine d'une certaine classe privilégiée : « une classe sacerdotale, une classe aristocratique, une classe bourgeoise. En définitive, lorsque toutes les autres classes se seront épuisées, l'État deviendra le patrimoine de la classe bureaucratique pour finalement tomber — ou, si vous préférez, atteindra la position d'une machine. » [7]

Je ne suis point communiste parce que le communisme concentre et fait absorber toutes les puissances de la société dans l'État, parce qu'il aboutit nécessairement à la centralisation de la propriété entre les mains de l'État. [...] Je veux l'organisation de la société et de la propriété collective ou sociale de bas en haut, par la voie de la libre association, et non du haut en bas par le moyen de quelque autorité que ce soit. Voilà dans quel sens je suis collectiviste et pas du tout communiste .
Prétendre qu'un groupe d'individu, même le plus intelligent et les mieux intentionnés, sera capable de devenir la pensée, l'âme, la volonté dirigeante et unificatrice du mouvement révolutionnaire et de l'organisation économique du prolétariat de tous les pays, c'est une telle hérésie contre le sens commun et contre l'expérience historique, qu'on se demande avec étonnement comment un homme aussi intelligent que Marx a pu la concevoir.
Nous n'admettons pas même comme transition révolutionnaire, ni les Conventions nationales, ni les Assemblées constituante, ni les gouvernements provisoires, ni les dictatures soi-disant révolutionnaires ; pire que nous sommes convaincus que la révolution [...] lorsqu'elle se trouve concentrée entre les mains de quelques individus gouvernants, devient inévitablement et immédiatement la réaction.
Je me demande comment il fait pour ne point voir que l'établissement d'une dictature universelle, collective ou individuelle, d'une dictature qui ferait en quelque sorte la besogne d'un ingénieur soi chef de la révolution mondiale, réglant et dirigeant le mouvement insurrectionnel des masses dans tous les pays comme on dirige une machine, que l'établissement d'une pareille dictature suffirait à lui seul pour tuer la révolution, pour paralyser et pour fausser tous les mouvements populaires.
Et que penser d'un congrès international qui, dans l'intérêt soi-disant de cette révolution, impose au prolétariat de tout le monde civilisé un gouvernement investi de pouvoirs dictatoriaux, avec le droit inquisitorial et pontifical de suspendre des fédérations régionales, d'interdire de nations entières au nom d'un principe soi-disant officiel et qui n'est autre que la propre pensée de Marx, transformée par le vote d'une majorité factice en une vérité absolue ?
Si le prolétariat devient la classe dominante, qui demandera-t-on, dominera-t-il ? [...] Qui dit État dit nécessairement domination et, par conséquent, esclavage. [...] Sous quelque angle qu'on se place, on arrive au même résultat exécrable : le gouvernement de l'immense majorité des masses populaires par une minorité privilégiée, Mais cette minorité, disent les marxistes, se composera d'ouvriers. Ont, certes, d'anciens ouvriers, mais qui, dés qu'ils seront devenus des gouvernants, cesseront d'être des ouvriers et se mettront à regarder le monde prolétaire du haut de l'Etat, ne représenterons plus le peuple, mais eux-mêmes et leurs prétentions à le gouverner.
Étatisme et Anarchie.
